Chanan is a cabinet member of Pharen and according to his planet fashion he wears a long, male cut Chinese robe with a Tao symbol on the front. He also carries a long wood staff and has a really white long beard and eye lashes. He's bald, but he hides it with a big hat. Chanan can't create illusions, but he knows a bit about illusionary spells because being Aska too young to cover her role, it's him who currently rules over the planet as acting regent.

He's surely wise, and he knows how to get by from almost every kind of situation. However, to get this fact in his still too young Princess' mind isn't very easy. Chanan is quite stubborn and he takes everything really seriously, that's why Aska argues with him a lot. She doesn't like the old man telling her not to use high level illusions at her free will and she usually ends up yelling at him for the slightest things. They never agree, but as a counterpart he does treat Aska fairly harshly, because his only aim on life is to turn her into a perfect lead for Pharen, and this can only be acquired thorough self sacrifice and experience. He never hits her, though. During their quarrels, poor Sanyun usually stands in the middle not knowing whom he should listen to.

His job surely is not too easy, considering the behavior of Princess Aska, and he often must keep silent when she starts laughing maniacally over serious matters or when she teases Sanyun and he. He's indeed a very patient man...Few old geezers would undergo the madness of an inexperienced, spoilt little brat like he does. He loves his planet and is concerned for Pharen's fate, but he surely loves Aska very much too, and wants her to be a true princess.

The acting regent, he leads the Pharen government until Lady Aska is old enough to take her seat. A relative of the royal family, he has some magical abilities. He sees great potential in Lady Aska, and his unforgiving regimen of study and discipline is his way of showing that he cares. Lady Aska calls him a "preachy old man", but he doesn't mind putting up with her abuse. He hopes that when he's gone, Sanyun will continue to guide Aska.
