The Mashin are ancient gods
that can be worn as armor by the Magic Knights. Before the three
girls wake them, they slumber in their elemental shrines in their
animal forms. Once awoken, they resemble giant mecha. The swords
they wield match those of their owners. Selece is the Spirit of
Water. He can be found in the Shrine of water deep beneath Cephiro's
ocean. When Umi comes to unlock him, he first requires that she show
him her strength of heart. In Japan, dragons are most often
associated with water, unlike the fiery dragons of European
tradition. Windam is the Spirit of Wind who resides in a shrine on
Cephiro's flying mountain. He resembles a giant phoenix. Fuu passes
Windam's test of Heart by showing that she would give her life for
her friends, even though they only just met. Rayearth is the Spirit
of Fire and resembles a fire-manned wolf. He resides in the Shrine
of Fire inside of a volcano. In order to free Rayearth, Hikaru has
to chose between saving herself or sacrificing herself for her
friends.
In order to save princess Emerode, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu must become
the legendary Magic Knights of the legends by reviving the Mashin, enormous,
living mechas. During the whole 1st season we follow the girls in
their quest to first get their Escudo swords, the keys to the Mashin,
and then in their quest to wake them up, while finding themselves
hindered by Zagato's soldiers. One by one the Spirits are revived and
then, on the 18th episode, when Rayearth accepts Hikaru as
his Magic Knight, the battle against the ultimate foe can finally begin.
In order to have them fight alongside, the girls must prove the strength
of mind of a true Knight and overcome their fears. Without the Mashin the
girls are no match for their main enemies: Zagato and in
particular, princess Emerode. In order to defeat Emerode in her Mashin
form, Hikaru, Umi and Fuu must unite their separate Mashin to make a
comination Mashin: the Ultimate Mashin. It combines the wings of
Windam, the tail of Selece and the fiery sword of Rayearth.
In season II they accept to fight
again with the Magic Knights against Cephiro's enemies and to help them
to find a new Pillar. In many occasions they reveal themselves not
only as the Knights' allies, but also as friends, older mentors who
can advise the young girls. When the last battle ends, they vanish in
Cephiro's sky while in the manga it turns out they had been created by Mokona (The
creator of everything!) and so they leave with him for another
dimension.

Did you know
that...
In Italy Selece is called "Feres" because
"Ceres" called to mind the beer brand, and the anime adaptors didn't want little alcoholics in front of the TV...
"Rayearth" actually means "light of
Earth".
"Ceres"
is taken from a Toyota Corolla
hardtop sedan, while "Windam"
is from Lexus ES-300, Toyota
Windom.
Ceres first appearance is in ep. 10
Windam first appearance is in ep. 15
Rayearth first appearance is in ep. 18
