Once the high priest of the princess, he's
introduced as the worst villain in
the first season, the man who kidnaps the good princess because of his
mysterious evil schemes. Zagato has a black armor with cloak which covers his whole
body and he's very powerful. He watches the Knights from afar and sends his minions in an attempt to
end the legend of the Magic Knights. In typical RPG style, you never
face the boss before you're up to the fight and he appears
relentless towards his companions and followers (even coercing a bewitched
Rafaga to serve him). But Zagato is not the typical good-looking
black clad villain, he's much more: he and Emerode are in love, and thus for the sake of his own
heart, positioned himself against the Magic Knights. He loves her so much that he cannot bear to see her suffer from being the
Pillar, always spending her time to pray for the people of her land instead of praying for herself.
But Emerode's heart couldn't forgo her duties as pillar to find her
happiness with Zagato,
because she loved Cephiro more than her own life. Zagato, on the other hand, decided to fight the Magic Knights because he didn't want to see his love killed -- even if her being alive meant that Cephiro would fall to ruins.
Zagato is determined and self-assured, one of the most
determined souls in Cephiro, and he does not feel guilt in loving
the Pillar, knowing the consequences. He would destroy anything and
anyone to finally see Emerode free from Cephiro's rules. Briefly,
he's "the man that lives for his love", and also fights for his
love. The guy that could care less what went on in the world (and
whether it even exists or not) if he can have his woman. However
these lovers are basically different: Emerode would have never left
everything to follow her wish and, at the end, they both die. In
Cephiro, all powers are based on will, and since Zagato is the
greatest priest, he has enough will to create his own Mashin. The
girls defeat it by combining their energy to cast the devastating
Spiral Flash. Ultimately, he fails, soon followed by his beloved
Emerode, whose wish is finally fulfilled. She sensed that, at the
end, the only way for them to stay together free of guilt, was to
die together...
Alcyone is desperately in
love with him, but he kind of despises her.

As Princess Emerode's chief Sol, or Priest, it was his
duty to protect her so that she could focus her prayers on keeping
Cephiro's safe. He always performed this function perfectly and was much
loved by the people around him. But when he fell in love with Emeraude and
she set up the cycle of her destruction, Zagato did all that he could to
stop the Magic Knights. He acted not out of evil, as the three girls first
suspected, but out of love.

His name is after Italianian car "Lancia

His Portuguese name is "Zagar".
In the Italian comic version of MKR Zagato is called "Zagarth".
He is called "Shinkan" in the manga while "Sol" in the anime.
